Steven Townsend is a co-editor of 21st Century Chinese Poetry, a series that I follow. But he translates Italian, Spanish and French. But he composes Tanka, an ancient Japanese poetry form. A Renaissance man.I don't know why Haiku is more popular than Tanka. Tanka is only five lines, but that's more accommodating than Haiku's three. Perhaps Haiku has enjoyed better poets down the ages. That could be changing. In the late 80s, Machi Tawara was writing tanka poems for Japanese periodicals. Millions wrote answering tanka. Millions more bought her collected tanka, Salad Anniversary. For poetry, that is phenomenal. I bought that book; I bought Japanese-English dictionaries. I tried Japanese.
Japanese is not easy. And Machi was not just Japanese, she was also very young, and female. I wanted to slap her boyfriends silly. Mr. Townsend's poet's voice is middle aged and male. He is urban, lives in a small apartment with a kitten and visiting pigeons, and sometimes a lover. He rides the subway to work, where winter is cold, where garbage trucks wake you up. I know this guy.
I have not finshed reading his book. I am in no hurry to do so. I savor a few poems a day. I wonder why I didn't write this review as a series of tanka poems.

"Tanka" is the name for a Japanese poem consisting of 31 syllables in 5 lines. I probably could not write them myself but I sure love how they sound and I can appreciate their fresh beauty. In this book of poems, Steven Townsend observes the outer world which is mostly cold during winter and details his inner world which is warm and comforting. There are a lot of contrasts like cold city streets and warm hands or lips. The descriptions of kissing seem innocent all while erotic. He doesn't linger on a moment but quickly describes one experience after the other. In one poem he talks about a cute kitten and in another he discusses the feeling of being lonely in a crowd. His despair at not being with the woman he loves as much as he'd like is very apparent. You quickly start to wonder about who this goddess of a woman is and why they can't be together forever. If you love reading poems of a poet who is so hopelessly in love he can barely go minutes without thinking of his object of desire then these poems will delight you. You can truly feel the depth of his emotion in every love poem.
